World Cup FIFA History
First World Cup was played in Uruguay 13 to 30 July 1930, by the will of the president of the International Federation of Association Football, Jules Rimet. Since then the World Cup were played every four years except that on two occasions: 1942 and 1946 when the tournament was not played due to World War II.
In honor of its founder, from 1930 to 1970, the league was called the Jules Rimet World Cup. Only after 1970, the competition takes the name of today's FIFA World Cup. In this year, Brazil was crowned for the third time world champion and, according to the rules, he was allowed to enter a possession of the trophy. This raises the need to create a new cup and the lens were well viewed 53 different models and the choice fell on the creation of the Italian sculptor Silvio Cazzaniga.
The new cup is 36 cm tall, made of 18 carat gold and weighing 6,175 grams. The base contains two bands macheliche (a semi-precious stone) and the bottom is engraved with names and year of the National Convention that are imposed in the league since 1974. Gazzaniga described his creation thus:
"The lines arise from the base, rising in spirals, to hold the whole world. The shapes are two athletes who exult in the moment of victory."
Until 2006 the country had won the honor of hosting the prestigious trophy until the next edition, and when you pick it received a copy laminated in gold. Since 2006, because of the large expenses incurred for the repair of the trophy due to several dents and scratches, FIFA decided that the cup remains in possession of the nation, winning only two hours after the award of the trophy, under close supervision. The original trophy was then custidito the FIFA headquarters in Switzerland.
